With PFAS-free claims everywhere, it's harder than ever to know which brands are genuinely free of all forever chemicals. This practical guide breaks down exactly what to look for — and what red flags to avoid.
The "PFOA-Free" Trap
The most common misleading claim in cookware marketing is "PFOA-Free." While technically accurate (PFOA was mostly phased out by 2015), this label says nothing about:
- PTFE: The most common non-stick coating (Teflon) is itself a PFAS — and "PFOA-Free" PTFE pans still contain it
- Replacement chemicals: Manufacturers often substituted PFOA with GenX, ADONA, or other PFAS compounds
- Other PFAS: There are 10,000+ PFAS substances. Being free of one means little
What to Look For
To verify a pan is genuinely PFAS-free, check for these indicators:
- "PFAS-Free" (not just PFOA-Free): The claim should explicitly cover all PFAS, not just one compound
- Coating type: Sol-gel ceramic, cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel, or enameled coatings are inherently PFAS-free
- Third-party verification: Look for independent lab testing (SGS, TÜV, etc.) rather than just manufacturer claims
- Transparency: Brands that list specific coating technologies (e.g., "Thermolon" by GreenPan) rather than vague claims are more trustworthy
Red Flags to Avoid
- ❌ "PFOA-Free" without mentioning PFAS or PTFE — likely still contains PFAS
- ❌ "Non-toxic" with no specifics — legally meaningless in most markets
- ❌ "Green" or "eco" branding with no certification — may be greenwashing
- ❌ Unusually low prices for "ceramic" pans — some cheap "ceramic" pans use PTFE with a ceramic-look finish
