PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances)

TOXIC

The "forever chemical" umbrella that includes PTFE, PFOA, and ~12,000 related compounds.

Health Risk — Avoid

Associated with significant health risks at relevant exposure levels.

What It Is

PFAS is an umbrella term for a class of approximately 12,000 synthetic chemicals all built on extraordinarily stable carbon-fluorine bonds. PTFE and PFOA are both PFAS compounds. They are called "forever chemicals" because they persist indefinitely in the environment and accumulate in human tissue and blood. The US EPA, EU ECHA, and WHO have all flagged PFAS as a growing public health crisis.

Health Concerns

Multiple PFAS compounds are linked to cancer (kidney, testicular), thyroid disruption, immune suppression, infertility, and developmental delays in children at sufficient exposure levels. Studies show PFAS appear in the blood of virtually all Americans tested. Regulatory limits are being tightened globally. The EU has proposed restricting the entire PFAS class under REACH regulations.
